The Shot Heard Round the World

After lunch at the beach we headed to Lexington and Concord, where we ran into a rainstorm.

The Revolutionary War started at Lexington and Concord.  The British heard reports of a secret weapon supply hidden by the Massachusetts militia in Concord.  They marched from Boston to Concord.  Fortunately for the colonists, Paul Revere warned them of the coming British on his famous midnight ride.

When the British came into Lexington, they found minutemen waiting for them on the Lexington green.  A skirmish ensued, started by the shot heard around the world.  When the British finally searched Concord they found nothing.  The militiamen defeated the British at the North Bridge in Concord, forcing them to march back to Lexington.  The British met up with reinforcements in Lexington, but still performed a tactical withdrawal back to Boston.  The militiamen fired at the British all the way back to Boston while hiding behind rock walls, trees and in houses.  The militiamen would fire then run ahead through pastures and trees to another spot to fire on the British again.

We saw this statue to the minutemen on the green in Lexington.

We saw Louisa May Alcott's house where she wrote Little Women.
