General Sherman's Christmas Gift - Savannah, GA

"I beg to present you as a Christmas gift the city of Savannah."
General William Tecumseh Sherman to President Abraham Lincoln, December 22, 1864

"Savannah would be better for you. You'll just get in trouble in Atlanta."
-- Gone with the Wind, Mammy to Scarlett O'Hara

Savannah, Georgia is a city with a unique a very beautiful layout.  The "Oglethorpe Plan" as it is known, called for the city to be built around a series of lovely park-like squares surrounded by gorgeous old homes.  (Well, the plan didn't actually call for old homes, but they're old now!)

The city also features a riverwalk along the Savannah River filled with shops and restaurants.  We ate lunch at a Greek restaurant facing the river, and had flaming cheese.

After lunch, we toured the Davenport House, Savannah's first restoration project.  The house was interesting because it belonged to a middle-class family, and like our house, went through years of neglect before being restored.  I think it looks like something out of a Jane Austen movie!

More Savannah views.

This is the house that was featured in the movie Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil.  The girls and I watched the movie after seeing Savannah.  It's very atmospheric and not for little kids!
