I wanted to visit more living history museums on the way home, so we stopped at Ohio Historical Village. Since it was raining and I was feeling a little Civil War-y, I wore Karl's Confederate jacket into the museum. The first building we entered was a school, and no sooner had we stepped in than two Union soldiers showed up looking for Confederate sympathizers. I was standing right next to them, but they somehow missed me and walked away. However, the schoolteacher had noticed and she thought it was funny that they'd looked right past me!
Brennan got to demonstrate a punishment.
This is made from human hair. That's what the Victorians did to preserve a piece of their loved ones.
This was a cool toy - I want to make one! When you spin the disc, the pictures move.
This lady, a free black woman, told us all about how she and her husband had moved to Ohio from New York because they were afraid of kidnappers acting under the Fugitive Slave Laws and sending them into slavery in the south. Although she was free, many of the bounty hunters tasked with returning escaped slaves were none too picky about whom they captured. The fugitive slave laws were laws passed by the United States Congress in 1793 and 1850 to provide for the return of slaves who escaped from one state into another state or territory. The severity of this measure led to gross abuses and defeated its purpose. These state laws were one of the grievances that South Carolina would later use to justify its secession from the Union. Attempts to carry into effect the law of 1850 aroused much bitterness.
We got to watch a Civil War era base ball game, which was really neat after our own game in May. Later, we saw a collection of old balls and bats and spoke for awhile to a man who plays for the "Muffins."
The kids had never tried Pop Rocks. I wish I'd gotten a picture of their faces when they tried them with a sip of soda! (Couldn't get this picture to turn.)
In the evening, since it was raining and we didn't want to drive around looking for fireworks, we went to a really fancy mall, had a lovely dinner at California Pizza Kitchen, and watched a movie, White House Down. We managed to catch a view of a few fireworks from our hotel room. Although we missed our usual 4th of July activities, it was a really fun day.
